rabid1st for helping me clean it up a bit.
Disclaimer: Not mine… never will be.
Summary: Ten II and Jackie discuss the Doctor’s motives for leaving Rose behind.
Author’s Note: This is written partially as an answer to a prompt I received fourteen months ago from
nicis_anatomy because of my A-Z drabble prompt post, and because there are so many people losing hope about Ten/ Rose.
“The individual must not merely wait and criticize, he must defend the cause the best he can. The fate of the world will be such as the world deserves.” -- Albert Einstein
He stood staring out the window at the stars, watching as the black silhouettes blocked out the light as they moved across the sky. The stars flicked in and out as the celestial traffic moved across the cosmic expanse.
With a heavy sigh he ran a hand through his hair. Barely one day in and he was already antsy. Everything inside of him wanted to go out and explore those stars, find new planets, but he would never get to.
The other him had made sure of that.
The door behind him opened. He didn’t need time lords senses to know Jackie Tyler when he heard her. Even at a normal human level, he could still recognize her footfalls anywhere.
“Is she finally asleep?” he asked, not turning around.
“Yeah,” Jackie replied as she stepped up beside him, looking out at the grounds. “How many times must she go back to him before he gets it through his thick skull?”
He shook his head. Of course the Doctor knew why she did it. He always knew. He just refused to admit it to himself. Because he knew better for her. Always knew what she should have.
This idiotic arrangement was just another crack pot idea.
It wasn’t just that he wanted what he thought was better for her. He was afraid.
“He doesn’t want to hurt her,” he said finally, voicing the thoughts bombarding his brain. Even as a human his brain was going a million miles an hour.
“And this isn’t hurting her?” Jackie spat bitterly.
She’d just spent an hour trying to be sure Rose wasn’t doing herself harm. For all the sobbing she was doing was making Jackie nervous. She sounded worse than she ever had after Canary Warf.
He sighed, trying to think of a way to describe what he meant.
“He was shot, Jackie. He was supposed to die. He should have died. Should have regenerated, but he didn’t. He cast his regeneration off onto his hand. He wasted it. Now he is going to suffer the consequences of his actions.”
“And what would that be?" she snapped. "I don’t see how that is supposed to make anyone feel better. He's just shoving her here like a little momento in a box kept under the bed.”
Jackie drummed her hands on the window ledge. She was rather thankful it was dark in this room. Given ferocity of her anger, she might very well feel the urge to take out her aggression on he companion, for all he looked just like the man she was so frustrated with.
“He’s going mad.”
She just rolled her eyes.
“He’s already bonkers.”
He turned to her, his eye sparkling eerily in the dim light from the window as he said, “No, Jackie, he is going to lose all self control.”
She stared at him, thunderstruck. This clone was just as bonkers as the man who’d left him here. The Doctor wasn’t going to lose his self control. He was just being a complete idiot much as he always was.
“It’s going to happen gradually. Bit by bit his sanity is going to wane, and he will no longer be able to fight the impulse to play God with those around him. He’ll be the most destructive force in the universe.”
He furrowed his brow as he thought about the chaos and destruction the time lord him would likely cause in the other world.
They stood in silence for a while, as Jackie digested the thought he’d just given her.
“He was right to leave her here,” he said finally.
“What? With you?” Jackie said. “Lot of good you’ve been for her. She’s still heartsick over him. Isn’t there something you can do about that?”
“I love her, Jackie, but I’m not in love with her. I’ll keep her safe here, out of trouble, while I find a way to take her back to him.”
“But I thought you said he would be dangerous?”
He nodded.
“Then why would you take her back to him?”
“Because he needs her. She is the only thing that can save him from himself.”

Date: 2009-11-23 02:15 am (UTC)I am glad you liked it. But I fear I have no plans to continue it. This was my brief moment into accepting Ten II's existance, and I will now go back to my word of denial.
