Prompt: [livejournal.com profile] 60damnprompts: 60 days in the life of Rose Tyler: Day 38: Birthday(Table)

Summary: There were many things in Pete’s world which differed from her own.

<< Previous: Day 37: Sex

She didn’t realize exactly when she noticed it. When she was first trapped here, the separation from the Doctor was so intense, so painful; she couldn’t even begin to register differences of the world around, outside of the obvious.

The zeppelins were a little large not to notice, but she’d seen them before.

The little things were what escaped her notice. They flitted before her, but remained unseen for months.

Trying to settle into a new world and a new identity were consuming much of her attentions. The rest of her was trying to accept the surprise of her pregnancy. There was nothing left to notice dates weren’t quite the same.

By the time she realized the calendar in use was not the one she had grown up with, she had seen many more strange and unsettling variances between this and her home world.

Though it was definitely not something she was sure she would be able to get used to. She had a difficult enough time trying to remember exactly how many days were in each month. Now every trick she’d learned in primary school didn’t work.

What made it worse, with all the odd adjustments made at leap year she couldn’t be quite sure she’d remembered the days right unless she consulted her calendar.

That was why she had been alarmed by the pink envelope which interrupted her reading that afternoon.

She’d been sitting in one of the parlors. It was one of the quieter rooms in the house, far from the door, and main hallways. Curled up as tightly as she could manage, she was trying to enjoy a Jane Austen novel, but was spending more time noting the differences rather than simply enjoying the story for what it was.

How exactly her mother had managed to slip into the room so silently, she would never know, but a bright envelope was thrust in front of her page.

Rose jumped in surprise. She hadn’t expected to see anyone for another hour when her mother or Mickey would come round to check on her. She nearly dropped her book.

“It’s not going to bite you,” Jackie laughed, waving the envelope at her.

With little hesitation, Rose took the envelope and checked the address. It was definitely for her and had come from one of her workmates.

“That was nice of her,” she said, tearing it open.

A happy little character wished her a happy birthday on the front and inside there was another birthday wish and a little scrawled note about wishing her and the baby well.

With a smile, Rose felt grateful for having made some nice friends here. If anyone was to remember when her birthday ways, it had to be them, because she was evidently hopeless with dates.

I hate calendars and clocks Never can seem to keep track of what date things are and at what time.
