Title: Light One Candle
Characters: Ten/Rose
Rating: Teen
Disclaimer: Not now and never will be.
Summary: With many adventures come many memories, some good, some bad, and some which burn so strongly, they are like candles in the dark night, reminding to never stop believing.
Author’s Note: So, the plan was eight happy fics…. Yeah, we all know I have an angst issue, so here is the token angst fic, though its happier toward the end. It follows a similar set up as Dayenu, but this time I left the original lyrics of this song intact. Basically, I kept thinking about various stories which could go with each line of Peter, Paul, and Mary’s “Light One Candle”, and this is what happened.
“Light one candle for the Maccabee children
Give thanks their light didn't die”
Their host’s youngest granddaughter, Riah, had crawled into Rose’s lap as the Doctor sat down in the chair he’d used the past four nights for his storytelling. He smiled down at them, as he began.
His gentle voice drifted over the words, bringing the characters to life in the minds of his listeners.
He spoke of bravery and courage, and of cowardice and betrayal. The story he told was of a world as unkind as the one he and Rose had found themselves in for the past four days, but it was an older world, a land that belonged to a planet long extinct in this time.
Rose listened intently with the rest of their host’s family, for this was a story she had never heard, and she feared she may never hear him tell it again.
”Light one candle for the pain they endured
When their right to exist was denied”
She held tightly to his hand as they walked through the streets of the ghetto, on toward the home of his friend. She couldn’t believe how utterly sad it was here. The very air was oppressive and restricted her breathing, as he heart ached for every person they encountered.
“So many will be saved,” he whispered to her. “Just remember that. Many will be saved.”
They hurry onward toward their destination, but Rose would have given anything to run back to the TARDIS and take as many of those terrified children with them, if they could.
But some things couldn’t be changed.
What was going to happen, needed to happen
It was just so hard to forget those faces, when she knew so many of them would die. No matter how many stories of courage, bravery and defiance the Doctor told her, nothing would erase the heartbreaking looks of those children.
What right did anyone have to treat another human being like this?
”Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice
Justice and freedom demand”
He laid his head against the wall, trying to listen for a sound, an echo of her presence in the other world, but all he heard was silence.
There was nothing left of her. She was gone, trapped in another universe.
They had saved this world from total annihilation, but it had come at a cost. That cost was Rose Tyler, and her absence hurt far worse than he could even begin to imagine.
”Light one candle for the wisdom to know
When the peacemaker's time is at hand!”
Mickey leaned against the outside of the door as he shut it behind him. Rose was still crying. Each sob tore at his heart. He knew how much she loved the Doctor, he’d seen the way she’d looked each time she thought he was in danger.
He also knew how much that daft old alien loved her.
He stared up at the ceiling, still trying to think of something else he could say to her, when there were no words which could fix this. There was nothing which could make it better.
With a heavy sigh he walked toward the stairs.
First he’d start by making her a cuppa, because one thing he’d learned was that tea really did fix most anything.
Maybe, they could figure out some way to cut a hole in the fabric of reality using a kettle.
That would be all well and good, but he would need to start by getting Rose to pull herself together. Once she was calm, then they could figure out a way to send her back to him.
”Light one candle for the strength that we need
To never become our own foe”
“You can stop now.”
Donna’s words echoed in his head as he looked down at the destruction he had caused. Yes, he could stop now. He should stop now. If he let himself keep going who knew what would happen.
He made a mental note to thank Donna.
Little did she know, it had been her words which had saved him.
Saved him from himself.
If he’d been on his own…well, if he’d been on his own, he wouldn’t have stopped. He wouldn’t have cared. Everything he loved was gone, so he felt no reason to stop. In that moment, he’d felt there had been nothing left to live for.
But he was wrong.
No matter how bad things got, there was always something left to live for.
”Light one candle for those who are suffering
The pain that we learned long ago”
She watched in disbelief as the TARDIS faded from view. This couldn’t be happening. She hadn’t torn apart the very fabric of the universe to get back to him only to be trapped once more.
He didn’t have the right to make that sort of a decision for her.
This wasn’t how it was supposed to happen. How dare he. He couldn’t do this. This wasn’t right.
He knew how much it hurt to day goodbye that day.
She cursed his name a thousand times, as the tears began to trail down her cheeks. This wasn’t how it was supposed to end. He needed her. He always needed her.
This clone, metacrisis, whatever it was... didn’t need her. Not the way her Doctor did. He seemed perfectly content in and of himself, bcause he wasn’t the one who needed someone to make him better. The look in his eyes told her so.
Taking in a slow, shaky breath, Rose decided then and there, no matter what happened, she was going to get back to him, if it was the last thing she ever did.
Because he needed her.
”Light one candle for all we believe in,
That anger not tear us apart”
The sound of their voices, their fear, tore at his very core. It tore at the very fabric of his being, his very soul. It made his blood boil, and spurred him into action.
So many people died. Some many were lost to him. No one he loved was ever left for him. Always he wandered the world alone.
Always.
Why did this have to happen?
Why did all these horrible things have to happen, keep happening. Why couldn’t he stop it? Why couldn’t he change the world?
He was a Lord of Time. He had all the power in the universe. He could do what ever he pleased and there was no one to stop him. There was no one to tell him enough was enough.
This time he wouldn’t turn his back. This time he would change what shouldn’t be changed.
He would do it because he wanted to, because he wasn’t going to let the universe win.
Today he would be the victor. This time he would let his anger win, because things could be changed.
And he would be the one to change them.
”And light one candle to bind us together
With peace as the song in our heart!”
He held her tightly in his arms, swearing he was never going to let her go again.
There was no questioning the mode or the method. At that moment all they wanted to do was simply hold one another.
How or why didn’t matter.
It was the here and now which counted.
He’d been an idiot. There was no denying it, but he was going to do his best to make up for it, because Rose was truly the driving force in his life, and there was utterly no use denying it.
He did need her.

Note: I hope everyone who celebrates, had a wonderful holiday, and I also hope no one has lost faith in the waiting for Christmas. I still believe everything will work out. Happy Holidays.
