Summary: Eight times Rose knowingly and unknowingly lit the Hanukkah lights.

They were on a base on a tiny planet in the middle of a distant galaxy. Every window you looked out into a vast sea of stars. The view was gorgeous.

That night Rose was enlisted to help in the kitchen, which was actually seemed to be a more common occurrence than Rose liked to admit. The Doctor would hear her grumbling about always being relegated to the kitchen, even in the most ‘advanced’ societies, cooking seemed to be considered women’s work. He’d agree and take her somewhere nice as a way of apology of course.

If she was honest, she didn’t care. Cooking never bothered her.

The only problem she had with her current situation was the onions. Why they had to be grated by hand, she had no idea. She assumed their hosts were simply masochists and enjoyed sobbing throughout meal preparation. Or the food processors had broken from over use.

In the end, they were rewarded with a wonderful meal of roasted meat and fried potato and onion patties, a multitude of alien vegetables and fruit salads. It was a feast for a king enjoyed by the crew of a deep space sanctuary base.

After the meal, when the captain declared it to be sundown on some nearby planet (because the sun never quite seemed to rise or set where the base was) a small eight armed contraption was brought out and set on a table in the common area.

The first mate turned to Rose with a smile and handed her a small box.

“You’re the youngest one here,” she said with a smile.

Rose looked at the first mate and then at the Doctor not knowing what she was supposed to do. The Doctor waved her on with an encouraging smile, so she stood and followed the first mate to the table.

She was shown how to use the device to light the first branch, while a soft incantation of the ritual was said. The first mate had her set down the box and lift the branch she’d lit and light the next three branches, having Rose parrot the words she said.

After the lights were lit, Rose dropped onto the sofa beside the Doctor and rested her head on his shoulder while their hosts sang songs neither one knew.

“It’s a tradition from your planet,” the Doctor explained softly.

“Really?” Rose asked.

“It’s a celebration,” the Doctor whispered, “of an event that happened over two thousand years before you were born.”

Turning toward the four little lights, Rose listened to the gentle rhythm of the songs being sung, trying to learn the words. For a moment, she wondered how many more human traditions would stand the test of time.
