60damnprompts: 60 days in the life of Rose Tyler: Day 32: Lovers(Table)
Summary: Rose tries to pin down exactly what her relationship with the Doctor was.
<< Previous: Day 31: Apart
Things being as non linear and as confusing as they were, she had a difficult time pinning down just what her relationship with the Doctor had been.
Sarah Jane had called her his assistant. She couldn’t exactly accept that term. It was so technical and felt like more of a business partnership than a friendship. Though she did assist him on many of his creative and dangerous endevours, she didn’t like that term.
She was his companion. But a companion was anyone who kept someone company, for any period of time, unless they were on some planet where ‘companion’ meant a bit more than a friend.
She was definitely his friend. That couldn’t be argued by anyone. They and fun together and were practically inseparable.
Leaning back against the headboard, she stroked her swollen middle. He was definitely more than a friend.
“Friend’s don’t have babies together,” she whispered, repeating what her mother had told her many times before, contesting that constant declaration she'd used for so long, they were 'just friends'.
Having a child would make them lovers at least, but that wasn’t right either. It had only been once. A drunk and stupid once, but it was only once none the less. To top it off, they had gone about as if it had never happened, not even stopping to see if there were any lingering consequences of that night, like say, the baby she now carried.
No, he had thought it was the flu, and they went on.
He was a stupid fool.
Then again, if he was stupid, what was she? She should have known before she was trapped here.
Heaving a heavy sigh she tried to find some sort of comfortable position, but her belly kept getting in the way.
No, she couldn’t just have been his friend or companion. They had gone too far for that, but they couldn’t be considered lovers either, because they hadn’t gone far enough, not really. What they had wasn’t exactly an intimate relationship.
There was only one other option, both simple and straightforward.
According to one certificate, lost somewhere aboard the TARDIS in another universe, and the plain little gold ring which graced her finger when she wasn’t quite so swollen, she knew who she was to him.
She was his wife.
For better or for worse--and this was definitely worse--she was his.
Sometimes she wondered what would happen if they had accepted that marriage after it had happened, but what was the point in wondering what might have been, when what was and what is were too prevalent in her life.
When he came for her--because he would come, she couldn’t lose hope in that—she would tell him just what they were.
They weren’t just companions, friends or lovers. They were husband and wife, and that made them all of the above.
